Keeping a Pump Station Running with a Managed Spares Program
A pipeline operator moved from reactive buying to a planned critical-spares program for its pump stations.
The Challenge
A regional pipeline operator managed several remote pump stations. Spare parts were bought as failures occurred, which meant frequent emergency orders, long expedite chains and occasional downtime while waiting for material.
The operator wanted fewer surprises without simply buying more of everything.
The Solution
RNOW reviewed maintenance history and equipment lists with station teams and grouped parts by how critical they were and how often they were used. Critical spares were stocked on site at agreed levels, and RNOW managed replenishment as parts were consumed.
Common maintenance items were assembled into labeled kits for scheduled work, so crews arrived with everything they needed.
The Results
- Fewer emergency purchases and expedited shipments
- Faster turnaround on planned maintenance because kits were ready
- Better visibility of usage for budgeting
- Emergency purchases and expedited shipments reduced by roughly a third
